Wintour’s Leap rock climbing
The climbing and abseiling at Wintours Leap is in the lower Wye Valley, close at hand for a rock climbing adventure near Bristol. This is a gorgeous spot with a 30-40 minute scenic walk in through the riverside woodlands, passing the ruins of a centuries’ old chapel. The climbing itself takes you up to wonderful views of the tidal river Wye, down towards the Severn Estuary. Wintours Leap does not have any formal facilities and is best suited to a full day adventure, due to the length of time required to walk in.
South Wales rock climbing
Brecon Beacons rock climbing sessions take place at Llangattock on the edge of the mountains above Crickhowell or on the cliffs above Merthyr Tydfil. Our Bannau Brycheiniog / Brecon Beacons rock climbing sites are a little more remote, with no on site facilities. Our Brecon Beacons sites are ideal for groups wanting to go rock climbing and abseiling near Abergavenny, Brynmawr and Brecon.

You can help to choose the routes you climb and set your own targets. Rock climbing encourages co-operation and mutual support, although a little friendly competition usually creeps in as well. You’ll enjoy a physical, energetic activity, so it’s great exercise too!

All of our rock climbing instructors are qualified, experienced and extremely familiar with our venues in the Wye Valley and Brecon Beacons. We only work with carefully chosen instructors who hold a minimum of the Rock Climbing Instructor Award, so you can be assured of the best experience. We’re here to help you make the most of your activity, so whether you need a little extra support or even a bit more challenge, your instructor will tailor the session to you.
At Borderlands we take our responsibilities seriously. We’re AALA Licensed to work with children and young people (licence number L36017) and we hold public liability insurance to the value of £10m. All of our instructors hold an in date, outdoor-specific first aid qualification.
Our rock climbing sessions usually take place at Wintour’s Leap, near Chepstow in the lower Wye Valley or in the Bannau Brycheiniog / Brecon Beacons national park. and within an hour or so drive of Bristol, Cardiff and Birmingham. Please ensure you have confirmed the venue for your activity before travel.
We run half day (typically 9-12.30 or 1.30-5.00) or full day rock climbing sessions. Timings include the approach to and from the cliffs, which is a rough and uneven track. This usually takes around 10 – 30 minutes in each direction but varies depending on which site we’re using. conditions underfoot and personal fitness.
Footwear must be well fitted, secured to the foot and have a good tread capable of dealing with mud, rocks and slippery surfaces. Footwear worn should provide a good level of support and protection across the foot from rocks both underneath and on top of the foot. In some cases supple walking boots or ‘adventure/outdoor’ shoes could be worn. Old trainers, daps, wetsuit booties and sandals with insufficient tread are not appropriate. If you do not have appropriate footwear you will not be allowed to participate in the activity. If you have your own climbing shoes, you could bring these if you choose but still need appropriate footwear for the walk down to the cliff along uneven and slippery tracks. Long sleeved tops and trousers are advisable to help protect you from scuffs and scrapes. Waterproof clothing should be brought if rain is expected as there is little shelter once away from the car park.
If you need / use any medication such as asthma inhalers or emergency auto injectors for allergies, these must be brought with you. We’re unable to take participants who have declared any emergency medication unless they have it with them on the day. There is a café on site close to the car park, but it’s advisable to bring a snack and drinks for during the activity. Sun cream may be advisable depending on the weather forecast.
The activity is physically demanding in nature and involves walking along rough and uneven ground to reach the start point. If you have pre-existing medical conditions that may be aggravated by this, you must declare them to us in advance of the activity. It is a condition of our insurer that the following are not permitted to participate in our rock climbing activities: Anyone under the influence of alcohol or drugs Anyone who is knowingly pregnant Anyone who has had an operation within the past twelve months that, through participating, could aggravate the object of the operation Anyone undergoing medical treatment for an ailment that may be aggravated, including but not limited to high blood pressure, epilepsy, back problems, neck problems or any heart condition Anyone suffering from any other condition that may be aggravated If there is any doubt regarding your fitness to participate or whether your condition could be aggravated by your participation we will ask you to provide written confirmation from a GP or healthcare specialist that you are not considered at risk by participating. Participants under the age of 18 must have signed consent to take part from their own legal guardian in advance of the activity.
