What You Need/Extended Info

South Wales Abseiling Venue Information

Our Abseiling sessions take place at the Llangattock escarpment in South Wales. Please check your pre-activity information carefully to confirm the venue.

How long will the activity last?

We run half day (typically 9-12.30 or 1.30-5) or full day abseiling sessions. Timings include the approach to and from the cliffs, which is a rough and uneven track. This usually takes around 20 minutes in each direction but varies depending on conditions underfoot and personal fitness. The number of turns you get at abseiling depends in part on your group size: smaller groups will have more turns in the same time than a larger group would have.

What should I wear for Abseiling?

Footwear must be well fitted, secured to the foot and have a good tread capable of dealing with mud, rocks and slippery surfaces. Footwear worn should provide a good level of support and protection across the foot from rocks both underneath and on top of the foot. In some cases supple walking boots or ‘adventure/outdoor’ shoes could be worn. Old trainers, daps, wetsuit booties and sandals with insufficient tread are not appropriate. If you do not have appropriate footwear you will not be allowed to participate in the activity. If you have your own climbing shoes, you could bring these if you choose but still need appropriate footwear for the walk down to the cliff along uneven and slippery tracks. Long sleeved tops and trousers are advisable to help protect you from scuffs and scrapes. Waterproof clothing should be brought if rain is expected as there is little shelter once away from the car park.

What do I need to bring?

If you need / use any medication such as asthma inhalers or emergency auto injectors for allergies, these must be brought with you. We’re unable to take participants who have declared any emergency medication unless they have it with them on the day. There is a café on site close to the car park, but it’s advisable to bring a snack and drinks for during the activity. Sun cream may be advisable depending on the weather forecast.

Am I fit enough?

The activity is physically demanding in nature and involves walking along rough and uneven ground to reach the start point as well as a rough climb back up from the bottom. If you have pre-existing medical conditions that may be aggravated by this, you must declare them to us in advance of the activity. It is a condition of our insurer that the following are not permitted to participate in our abseiling activity:

  • Anyone under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Anyone who is knowingly pregnant
  • Anyone who has had an operation within the past twelve months that, through participating, could aggravate the object of the operation
  • Anyone undergoing medical treatment for an ailment that may be aggravated, including but not limited to high blood pressure, epilepsy, back problems, neck problems or any heart condition
  • Anyone suffering from any other condition that may be aggravated

If there is any doubt regarding your fitness to participate or whether your condition could be aggravated by your participation we will ask you to provide written confirmation from a GP or healthcare specialist that you are not considered at risk by participating. Participants under the age of 18 must have signed consent to take part from their own legal guardian in advance of the activity.
